The Why and What of Reading Assessment

If we are to ensure that as many children as possible are reading proficiently by the time they finish primary school it is clear that we must have careful assessment and monitoring of performance in reading and related skills.

Assessing and monitoring student learning is fundamental to a systematic and explicit approach to reading instruction.

Generally, assessments fall into one of two categories. Formative assessments, those which provide information that allows adjustments to be made as instruction occurs (placement tests, progress monitoring) and summative assessments, those which provide evaluative information about progress over a period of instruction or against learning benchmarks (norm-referenced, standardised assessments).

In this blog post I will be focusing on unpacking the Sunshine Phonics Decodables Assessment Kit which provides teachers with different types of formative assessments. This kit of assessment tools has been created to support the Sunshine Books Decodable Series and is an essential and useful tool for teachers.

Screening Tests
The Sunshine Phoneme and Word Screening Tests are quick, short and efficient tests to help you place students in the correct stage of the Sunshine Phonics Series, this test ensures that students are reading material that aligns with their current skills.
The tests consist of phonemes, words (decodable and nonsense) and tricky words.

Phonics Assessment
The Sunshine Phonics Assessment covers phonemes, graphemes, decoding words and tricky words. Assessment 1 can be used as a pre-test and placement tool before teachers use a set of books for teaching. Assessment 2 could be used as a post-test to check on new knowledge gained after explicit teaching has taken place.

Assessment of Reading Accuracy (ARA) and Comprehension
The ARA is an assessment of a student’s decoding and reading skills. The ARA allows teachers to assess how well a student has assimilated their phonics knowledge and word blending skills. There are optional retell and comprehension questions supplied (literal and inferential) in addition to some vocabulary questions.

Encoding Assessment
The encoding assessment assesses students’ writing and spelling of dictated words and sentences. It uses words and sentences from the text as these are decodable. The focus is on encoding (spelling) rather than creating content.

So if you haven’t had a chance to explore the suite of free assessments created by the team at Sunshine Books I highly encourage you to do so. It is available for download here.
